20 Year Bahamian Jonquel Jones Not Only Stands Tall on A Basketball Court But She is An Inspiration

1 min read

If anyone said that Bahamas or the Caribbean as region is short of inspiring stories, tell them they are wrong. I would like to introduce you to Jonquel Orthea Jones. She is a 20 year old Bahamian from Freeport, Grand Bahama and is believed to be just the third Bahamian girls’ basketball player ever to earn a Division I scholarship straight out of high school.

At 6ft 4 inches Jonquel is taller than the average guy but she also stands tall in her off the court accomplishments. As you watch her interviews, you can tell that this young woman is well grounded, with strong family connections and unquestionably a Bahamian at heart. Jonquel is definitely a shining star for not only Bahamas but for her current George Washington University team.

Here are two videos for you to watch, the first is an introduction to Jonquel and the second is about Jonquel’s return to Bahamas with her university team this week to play in a tournament.

She has a lot of accomplishments to her name. Just recently at the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Senior Championship in July, Jonquel led the Bahamian National Team to fifth place. The sky is the limit for this young Bahamian and I will definitely be cheering her.

For readers in Freeport, Grand Bahama you can get to see Jonquel on the court this week at the upcoming 12th Annual Junkanoo Jam Women’s College Basketball Tournament.

Thank you Jonquel, you are an inspiration for all of us!
