Seven years ago, Shawn Hercules visited earthquake ravaged Haiti and that trip inspired him to pursue a career in the field of public health.
Now, Hercules who is a Ph.D. student in the Biology Department at McMaster University, is on a mission to fight breast cancer. Current research has shown that there is an aggressive form of breast cancer that is killing mostly Caribbean women.
Hercules’ research will help thousands of women across the Caribbean who are at risk to this form of breast cancer. For many, the survival rate is low but Hercules is determined to fight it.
This is hearth warming story. I am truly grateful to this young man from Barbados, who has dedicated a significant part of his time to helping thousands of women from across the Caribbean. It is especially touching for many who have either fought or continue to fight cancer.
But we must also remember the individual stories of breast cancer survivors who are also inspiring.. I thought it would be helpful to share Debra Williams’ story, a breast cancer survivor from Jamaica
Although Hercules’ work might bring a small breakthrough in the fight against breast cancer, it offers hope for the future.
Thank you Hercules, all of us from the Caribbean salute you.
