Eight years ago this filmmaker interviewed Mrs Ruby from the Caribbean side of Nicaragua. I was drawn to her mannerism and personality. She reminded me of my grandmother.
Not in the sense of being able to play the guitar but her remarkable achievements, her strong faith in God, her optimism and her love for singing gospel songs. I remember my Granny singing while she cooked or do laundry. Some of those songs are stuck in my head, I can’t remember the full lyrics for most of those songs but when I am struggling I remember a few lines.
Like the song that Mrs Ruby sang in the video below, the words for the first two lines goes like this;
“This world is not my home I’m just a passing through
My treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue”
These words are a gentle reminder for me that I shouldn’t get hang up on material things as they are simply temporary.
I think Mrs Ruby represents the many grandmothers across the Caribbean who live to serve others, love’s God wholeheartedly, and has witnessed unbelievable things in their lifetime.
