Guyana 48th Independence

May 26, 2014, marks 48 years since Guyana became politically independent.

On this day many questions will be asked and perhaps the  most popular one will be, Are the Guyanese people better off today compared to before independence?

The Guyanese national anthem “Dear Land of Guyana, of Rivers and Plains”

Dear land of Guyana, of rivers and plains

Made rich by the sunshine, and lush by the rains,

Set gem-like and fair, between mountains and seas,

Your children salute you, dear land of the free.

Yet will all the resources and beauty, it seems many Guyanese rate their lives worse in 2014 than they have in the past several years. What do you think? Should the Guyanese people be optimistic?
