I realize how distant I am with regard to Haiti. For years I would simply glance over any headlines related to “that” country. Honestly, I had never really considered “them” part of the Caribbean, but the 2010 earthquake changed all that.
I came across this video clip centered around this young Haitian baseball player. The story touches on the devastating impact that cholera had on ordinary Haitians, only a months after the great 2010 earthquake. It killed at least 8,231 Haitians and hospitalized hundreds of thousands more.
I invite you to watch the video “Baseball in the time of Cholera”
I would guess that not many people from the rest of the Caribbean knew the magnitude of this cholera outbreak. I wasn’t really aware that so many Haitians had died. The story of this young Haitian boy is a sad reminder of the human toll. Imagine losing your mother to a disease that should have been under control in these modern days.
I end by saying, let’s embrace Haiti and the Haitian people as part of the Caribbean. I definitely will and I hope the few people who read this article, will do too.
